Deck with different shades of decking

Want to take your deck design up a notch? Try mixing different shades of decking. With all the manufactured decking available these days, you can choose from hundreds of colors. Designer collections include grays, browns, reds, and even golden yellows that when combined create one-of-a-kind deck designs that really bring the wow.

A Unique Deck Doesn’t Have to Cost a Lot

The beauty of it is that you basically use the same amount of decking, so the cost isn’t significantly higher. It could be slightly more expensive due to a bit more waste, or if you choose an intricate design, it may require more time to build which could increase labor costs slightly, but otherwise, it doesn’t increase the cost significantly. We’ve seen some amazing results with basic designs including simple borders, border insets, and complementary colors on adjoining levels. “I’ve seen some absolutely stunning decks that use multiple shades of planks,” said Caleb Hunt, owner of Creative Concepts and Design. “The wide variety of manufactured decking colors allows us to create unique and much more visually appealing decks.”

Here are three examples of mixing different shades of decking to give you some inspiration:

Step Up the Style

Multi-level steps with different shades of deckingYou can see how simply adding a contrasting color around the border really defines the shape and draws the eye to the edge. This effect is amplified when applied on steps or multi-level decks. The bold contrast between the two tones really makes this combination stand out. Instead of an ordinary deck, this design adds class and an unmistakably upscale feel.

“Manufactured decking has expanded the design choices and allows us to create one-of-a-kind decks that really wow,” Hunt said. “Our customers are extremely happy with the results.”

Break Up Long Narrow Decks

Use contrasting colors to add interest to long expanses of deck. If your deck is long and narrow, break up the boring by adding darker or lighter planks to create sections that let the eye rest and appreciate the pattern. Minor changes like this create a big visual impact without adding much more to the cost.

Boldly Go Where No Deck Has Gone Before

One of Hunt’s favorite combinations is mixing dark and light hues to create extreme contrast. In this example, the dark charcoal ties the deck and house together nicely while the yellow planks delineate the “kitchen” area creating an unmistakable two-room effect. Here different shades of decking are purposely used to create dissonance and drama.

This Is Not Your Dad’s Decking!

Unlike wood decks, manufactured decking lasts for decades. Considering how long these structures are around, it’s worth spending a little extra time in the design stage to make your finished deck an addition that will add aesthetic value to your home for years to come!
