If you’re designing a deck, you want to consider all of your options. Avoid the shoulda, woulda, couldas by considering these popular and updated deck options before you finalize your deck design plans.

1. Modern Railing

One of the biggest things we’re seeing in deck design is a variety of modern railing options. Instead of wood railing, modern decks feature everything from decorative iron to hog panel to wire cable to glass. Besides a non-traditional and updated look, many of these options provide other advantages. Visibility is one advantage. Since all of these options are narrower than wooden spindles and railing, visibility is increased. With glass, there is almost nothing to block your view.

2. Privacy Wall

Adding a privacy wall creates a relaxing space where you can escape from the world, not to mention the prying eyes of nosy neighbors. Privacy walls can be wood, lattice, woven, and even living. A row of tall trees makes a wonderful privacy wall. Privacy walls give you the option to have a fun family get-together or a romantic night around the fire pit.

3. Pergola

Pergolas are another great way to define your space. They make the perfect backdrop for outdoor furniture by creating the feel of a separate space yet, they don’t cut you off from others with solid walls. They allow sun and a nice breeze, but protect you a bit from both. Pergolas bring life to an otherwise ordinary deck and become an extension of your home. From a design standpoint, they provide a space to show off your taste and style and bring a little more sophistication and pizzazz to your deck. Throw a rug, a couch and a table under it and you’ve got an amazing outdoor space. You can even add fabric panels or curtains for privacy and shade. We build many covered decks from fully roofed to beautiful lanais and pergolas. Just let us know what you’re looking for.

4. Built-in Bars/Benches

If you plan to entertain on your deck, consider adding a built-in bar. Use your imagination. Your bar can be wood like your deck or metal, stone, granite…the possibilities are endless. You can even incorporate it into a tree like in the picture.  Built-in seating is also a great feature to have. It ensures that there is always somewhere for everyone to sit. If the seating is enclosed, you can even use it for storage of cushions, barbecue gear, or bug spray.

5. Under Decking

Expand your living space by adding under decking to your deck. Under decking or sub-roofs are great options to expand your entertainment space into a dry area that can also be enclosed. No more mud under the deck. Turn the area below your deck into a shady oasis on a hot summer day. Rain? No problem! Simply move the party to below the deck for a delightfully dry alternative. Under decking turns a good space into an awesome space.
