curved deck designs Leawood KS

We love designing decks that are out of the ordinary. One sure way to do that is to add some curves to your design. Straight lines are functional, efficient, and predictable, and while those are all admirable and important qualities, if you personify them, you might just come up with “boring” or “expected”. Let’s face it, most decks are square or rectangular, but a curved deck is really uncommon. Let’s look at why curved deck designs are so attractive.

The Allure of the Curve in Design

Why do designers use curves? First curves are graceful. They literally take off the hard edges and angles and smooth out the corners. Their flowing lines create softness and exude a feeling of safety, like a cocoon. Curves are, in general, felt to be more beautiful than straight lines. Because they avoid the harshness of straight, unbending lines, they are perceived as more elegant and aesthetically pleasing. Curved lines represent the fluid movement of water which conveys a sense of soothing movement and relaxation.

Curves Reflect Nature

Think of the curling vine, the shape of flower petals, a winding riverbed. With but a few exceptions, Mother Nature does not do straight lines. That’s why curvy lines feel very organic and effortless. Because these lines have an easy natural flow, they’re associated with nature and all things organic. If you’d like your deck to be an extension of nature, embrace curved lines in the design.

Curved Lines Create Curiosity

Because they express more spontaneity than the literal straightforwardness of a straight line, curved lines create a sense of curiosity. Curves have a powerful visual component in that they lead the eye, especially in areas of transition. But because the eye can only follow them for a short distance until they disappear, they beckon the viewer to move forward and seek out the unknown around the bend. They offer an element of surprise and create a feeling of wonder and anticipation.

Try Not to Stair

Deck with pergola & spiral staircase

Spiral staircases are a great way to add a little curve to your design. Typical decks have straight staircases that tend to take up a lot of space. Consider adding a spiral staircase to add a fun twist and a little unexpected beauty to your deck.
